Valentine’s Day for SINGLE Foodies & A ManCakes Giveaway!
I’ll have a Valentine’s Day for ONE please.
While everyone’s talking about the best Valentine’s Day menus, most romantic places to eat, best places for chocolates, cutest heart shaped cookies, candygrams and couple retreats, I’m going the opposite route. Go figure.
Don’t worry I’m not going to get all Beyoncé on you, although the song is totally in my head right now. But let’s face it. Why should couples have all the menus? There are single people who need to eat too, and here are a few of my celebrate yourself tips. That sounds really arrogant, but who’s judging you when you’re ‘alone’ anyways? Sure the Valentine’s dinner for 2 menus can be enjoyed by anyone, but here are some things that are just a bit better either alone or with a big group.
Dirty Talk < Dirty Burger.
La Brasserie Burger – Post coming soon!
Forget the dirty talk and get your dirty burger. If you’re dining solo, take advantage of leaving the manners at home because burgers are meant to be messy.
ReFuel offers a “dirty” Dry Aged Beef Burger with cheddar bacon and fries for $15.50, and it’s on special with a beer from 11:30am-6pm and after 9pm (closed M-F from 2:30pm-5pm). Sit at an open kitchen bar on a first come, first served basis.
The Oakwood Canadian Bistro offers their medium rare Burger – sesame bun, buttermilk fried onion, and smoked cheddar served with fries or salad for $15, and there’s also bar seating. First come, first served.
La Brasserie has their medium rare Burger – Aged white cheddar, bacon, tower of crispy onions, truffled aioli, and frites for $17. Sit at an open kitchen bar on a first come, first served basis.
And if you want to get really dirty then you might consider the Everest Burger at Hilltop Cafe Diner – 3 – 5 ounce burger patties, baked ham, cheddar cheese, mozza cheese, bacon, farmer sausage, mushrooms & onions, lettuce & tomato, Hilltop burger sauce, Mayo & Pickles, TALL on a Kaiser bun with fries for $19.95.
Who needs a love story when there’s Takes of the Cocktail!
Tales of the Cocktail is the world’s premier cocktail festival and it’s coming to Vancouver February 12-15. The festival is made for cocktail professionals and enthusiasts and it is open to the industry and public alike. It’s essentially a 4 day celebration of the cocktail with a calender of events and dinners. I don’t think you’ll have a problem finding entertainment here. It might even be better if you’re single too. Ticket info and details here.
Go for family style dining.
CRA Gold Award Critic’s Choice – Sautéed B.C. Dungeness Crab & Mixed Mushrooms with Amoy Premium Soy
There are certain cuisines that are just better enjoyed in a group such as Chinese, Korean and Indian. It’s all about family style dining and big portions. Generally speaking, if it’s a traditional restaurant in any of those categories, you’ll still get reservations on Valentine’s Day. Things like Peking duck, whole crab or lobster work better when there are more people, so gather a group for a full on gourmet feast.
Double Boiled Winter Melon Soup with Mixed Seafood is another dish that requires group dining.
Host an Oyster Potluck.
Sure wine and cheese are good, but why not switch things up? Instead of getting everyone to bring their favourite wine and cheese get everyone to bring a different kind of oyster and champagne… or wine. Oysters are aphrodisiacs so what better way is there to fall back in love with yourself?
**Follow Me Foodie Tip: If you’re shucking them at home you can throw them in the freezer for 10 minutes. The shells will relax and open a bit making it easier to shuck.
Who needs breakfast in bed when you can have it delivered and in cake!
Wait. What?! Yes. It’s all about the ManCakes = Cupcakes for Men. Boys, it’s okay to admit you like desserts, especially when they come with bacon and chicken skin sprinkles. Get your Night Pack: Buffalo Wing, Breakfast, Rum & Coke, Whiskey Lime, Tequila Pineapple and Chocolate Red Wine Mancakes or your Day Pack: Buffalo Wing, Breakfast, Pink Peppercorn, Apple Brie, Bacon Chili Chocolate, King Kong Mancakes. Ladies these mancakes won’t disappoint you either, and even better is that they’ll come delivered to your door. Let dessert come to you! Sharing is caring, unless your single… so don’t.

Oh look at that! I found a way to kind of control the winner being single!
Winner will be selected at random. Contest closes February 12, 2012.
Forgot how gigantic some burgers are ! Not only are the dirty burger and the Everest burgers impossible to cram in yer mouth, it’s bound to be messy. My choice for dining alone is to go to a good sushi bar and ordering from the chef. No man cupcakes for me, just give me a good shot of single malt, preferably Lavagulin.
Food I hate to share! I hate it when you order a decadent appy somewhere… its only like 4 bites of food! And your bestie wants to “just try a bit”. BOOOOOO! Order your own!
Definitely burgers and sandwiches – usually ends up falling apart in the process. 🙁
Slightly warmed two-bite brownies topped with vanilla ice cream… and when I feel like spoiling myself just a little more, sprinkle some pieces of peanuts and drizzle the whole thing with chocolate syrup. RAWR =)
I don’t like to share my chocolate. So, I buy 85% dark because I’m the only one who likes it
The only thing I think I can eat is the La Brasserie Burger….haha. Though I’ll have trouble cutting it :p
Mijune, you are too funny! I think most people would prefer your singles menu to a Valentine’s date! Man cakes yum yum!
Things I do not want to share…
-Follow Me Foodie’s Apple Pie In-A-Jar of course!!
-La Terrazza’s – La Creazione white chocolate cheesecake.
-Miku’s – Miku Zen box and Aburi Chirashi Tart.
-Shanghai River’s – Xiao Long Bao, everyone order their own basket!!
-Medina’s – Fricasse and Belgian waffles with white chocolate pistachio and caramel raspberry sauces.
-Da Kitchen’s Maui – Poi and Haupia Pie (best not in a jar pie I’ve ever had!!).
-Pho Quyen’s – Banh Cuon.
-Sushi Garden’s – Alaska Roll.
-PinkBerry – Anything from Pinkberry, rain or shine
-Bouchon Las Vegas – French Toast.
– Anything my mom makes at home lol.
– My memories of meals at the late Parkside =*(.
** I am going to have to stop myself before this gets any longer lol; getting hungry so time for lunch.. a half focaccia panini from La Grotta Del Formaggio.
As a single person who has lived alone for 15 years, I hate sharing everything. But I absolutely won’t share dan dan noodles ever.
definately any desserts or chocolates!
I like to share but then that’s why I make food at home or go out on my own so I can has it all!
Risotto! Will not share and might even eat offer to wipe someone else’s bowl clean might they look full
I hate sharing some of my favourite dishes, especially when I’m hungry!
I hate sharing noodles in soup since if I give some to my friends, I’ll be left with only a few strands of noodles. Bun Bo Hue is my fav and I’m lucky since most of my friends can’t stand spicy. I also hate sharing desserts as it’s quite hard to slice cupcakes in half. It doesn’t look pretty afterwards! lol
Won’t share really good ice cream.
Unless it’s with someone extra special.
Or unless someone give me something in return. . .
I dislike sharing food that falls apart easily and does not keep its form. Both sharing pieces ends up not being “very good lookin”.
I like sharing most foods, but I’m pretty possessive over home-made dumplings/pasta. i could eat it all day!
me too…Sushi Garden’s Alaska Roll. Hands off people!
I generally like sharing my food, but one thing I hate sharing is Thomas Haas almond croissants. Get your own people!
icecream :/
Naturally I hate to share my chocolate and desserts!!
I share everything just find it taste better that way.
I hate to share dessert but I have to do it anyway and usually I probably can’t even eat it all … oh and Taiwanese deep fried chicken nuggets! ^^
premium zuke from Miku Restaurant. each sushi is different and i want to taste them all! it’s too hard to cut them in half without messing up the filling. oh and also a box of assorted truffles.
i hate sharing things that are small and limited…
I like sharing my food with friends because then I get to taste theirs as well! The only things that I prefer not to share are things that fall apart easily. In most cases, my friends and I just end up taking a bite out of each others stuff instead of trying to figure out how to split it.
Don’t enjoy sharing icecream!
I seriously HATE to share my desert. Doesn’t matter what I’m having, it’s mine to eat and if they want some they can order their own.
I LOVE SHARING!!!
But….I *haaaaaaaaaaaate* sharing my chocolates. Good thing I love dark chocolate, because none of my friends do , which makes the “not sharing” easier 🙂
I HATE sharing sushi!!! It’s my absolute favorite food, it’s not cheap, and I love every bite of it!
Hate sharing fries and everyone always assumes they are up for grabs!!
I hate sharing the Sushi i get at Toshi’s.. i mean come on get your own
Congrats to Susan Roberts Rowan who entered on twitter. Winner was selected by random. Thank you everyone for entering and happy early v-day!
