Happy Bacontine Day! How much do Canadians love bacon?

A&W Bacontine InfographicYup! I didn’t even know there was such a day, but I can jump on board this occasion… and I’m happy to!

I guess Tuesday, February 16th marks the official “Bacontine Day”, and in celebration of the day A&W is announcing their #BaconGuarantee.

As of today, A&W is now the first and only national burger restaurant in Canada to serve bacon from pork raised without the use of antibiotics. The bacon is 100% Canadian raised, naturally smoked and contains nothing artificial using only naturally occurring preservatives.

Want to know the recipe? Well they gave it to me! A&W’s bacon recipe: pork, sea salt, cane sugar, cultured celery extract, cherry juice and natural smoke. They don’t add artificial preservatives such as artificial nitrates or nitrites to ensure it’s simple and naturally made. So how’s that for a change? A change for the better.

Given that 80% of Canadians say bacon makes a burger taste better, and 1 in 4 Canadians would give up Facebook and 39% would give up Instagram for bacon (based on a recent survey conducted by A&W Food Services of Canada Inc), it’s great to see A&W step it up.

As an ambassador for BC Pork and a blogger for Passion for Pork, I’m very proud of this incentive to improve the quality of their ingredients and support Canadian farmers.

This initiative is the next step in A&W’s Ingredients Guarantee, to source ingredients made with care, which launched in 2013. Since launching the Ingredients Guarantee, A&W has been the first and only national quick service burger restaurant in Canada to serve beef raised without the use of hormones or steroids too. As for antibiotic free chicken and eggs, they accomplished this in 2014 followed by the launch of organic, Fair Trade coffee in 2015.
