Izakaya

Last time I came here I loved it, and perhaps it’s because I’ve experienced more now that it wasn’t as satisfying, but things were noticeably different. It was a bit of a hit and miss menu with strengths in the soups and noodles and they do have an impressive selection of donburi and noodles.

My Follow Me Foodie Favourites & Best of 2012! I prefer calling it my “favourites” or most “memorable” experiences, but I’ll include “the best” just because I’m weak and want to align with every other “best of 2012″ list out there. This is a recap of my delicious 2012.

It’s constantly named “Best Casual Japanese” by local media. I still really like it, but I actually prefer their more casual sister restaurant Suika even more which opened last year. Kingyo serves funky and eclectic tapas, but I think they could deliver more as an upscale izakaya spot.

It was a modern replication of the Japanese country side and how fishermen would grill fish along the shore-side over an open flame by their boats. With fresh seafood surrounding the “boat”, the chefs here cook the food in front of their customers and transfer the dishes on long rowing ores.

In Vancouver many tend to think of izakaya places as funky Japanese restaurants with eclectic Japanese tapas. While these are izakayas, so are places like Zakkushi which specialize in grilled meats. An izakaya is simply a drinking establishment which also serves food. This is a great one!

Out of all the Guu locations, this one gets the toughest love from diners. Many prefer the downtown locations, as do I, and it’s perhaps due to consistency and ambiance. The crowd it attracts is more family oriented and it feels more like a standard restaurant than a funky and hip Japanese Izakaya place.

They Guilty Pleasures Gourmet Tour is a walking food tour which takes place in downtown Vancouver, BC. It includes 5 food stops with tastings and a few drink pairings. As a local and “foodie” in Vancouver, BC I was curious where this Guilty Pleasures Gourmet Tour would take us.

Jiro Dreams of Sushi… and so does Mijune (which is me by the way – hi!). It’s apparently one of the places to go for sushi in West Vancouver, so I decided to give it a try. It serves traditional sushi and modern Japanese izakaya, but It didn’t deliver to expectations and I found it quite overpriced.
