There are many excellent restaurants that go unnoticed or fly under the radar. Here are a few of my favourite mom-and-pop restaurants that have been around for years. They are rarely talked about and rely on word of mouth, but are key contributors to Vancouver’s diverse food scene.

It was named #1 Best New Restaurant in Canada by EnRoute Magazine. It is a farm to table Euro-Canadian bistro inspired by seasonal and mostly local ingredients. The concepts and techniques are European and the food is presented unpretentiously. A must try in Toronto.

The Toronto Tasting menu offered 8 very different small plates and each plate represented a neighbourhood of Toronto. When it came time for desserts, I was presented an heirloom carrot cake, chocolate brownie with blood orange, maple pecan bar, and foie gras ice cream sandwich!

David Chrystian was 4th runner up on Top Chef Canada, and he is the Executive Chef and co-owner of Victor Restaurant + Bar. The “Toronto Tasting Menu” offered 8 very different small plates and each plate represented a neighbourhood of Toronto.

This Canadian version of the “Big Apple” has so much to offer. A born and raised Torontonian put it very nicely when he said “the people are the same, but what sets Toronto’s neighbourhood’s apart is the food”. Here is a small taste of what to expect from Follow Me Foodie to Toronto!
Slavic Rolls are traditional Eastern European desserts made from sweet yeast dough. The pastry dough is wrapped around a wooden cylinder and rolled in cinnamon and sugar before being baked in a rotisserie oven. The sugars caramelize as it bakes and after they are rolled in your choice of toppings.

Yvonne Paczek is the wife with a passion for cooking and her husband Robert Hubicki is the supportive husband with the persistence to make things perfect. Together they own and operate Old Country Pierogi, Vancouver’s only Polish food truck.

There are three places in the Lower East Side that are considered New York institutions and this is one of them. A knish is a Jewish American food made famous in New York. It was here that I also forgot my camera and left it sitting on the communal counter right by the door of the bakery.
