There are many excellent restaurants that go unnoticed or fly under the radar. Here are a few of my favourite mom-and-pop restaurants that have been around for years. They are rarely talked about and rely on word of mouth, but are key contributors to Vancouver’s diverse food scene.
I can assume that their long term success has been due to consistency. Whether it be good or bad it is always the same, which has its pros and cons in itself. The food was actually good and the recipes have been passed down from generations so most dishes were tried, tested and true.

This Canadian version of the “Big Apple” has so much to offer. A born and raised Torontonian put it very nicely when he said “the people are the same, but what sets Toronto’s neighbourhood’s apart is the food”. Here is a small taste of what to expect from Follow Me Foodie to Toronto!

It’s not my favourite Filipino restaurant based on what I tried, but it was decent, quick, casual and very affordable. There were some execution issues and it was food that you just know they make better at home. It was just very average on a grander scale of things, but people seem to love it.

It’s opened by rock star chefs and I want to recommend everything! Chicago was off to a fantastic start and The Purple Pig hit a home run! The food was solid, the portions were more than fair and the prices were very reasonably for the ambiance, location and overall quality of food.

It was one of those “just pick a place” times and desperate times called for a desperate shake of an iphone for a “nearby” restaurant. Zawa offers casual pub food with some Greek specialties and Italian pastas, but it’s quite mediocre.
Martini’s Restaurant is a casual neighbourhood pub specializing in whole wheat pizza. The owners are Greek so they offer a selection of Greek food as well, with the kalamari and souvlaki being classic local favourites. It’s big portions for a cheap price and decent quality for the most part.
My Greek Taverna is a family owned Greek restaurant with 2 locations, one in Surrey and the other in Coquitlam. It offers generous portions, affordable prices and delicious Greek food. Nobody really knows about the Surrey location and it’s a great find!
