Graze opened in the old Fray location last year, a little after the wave of vegetarian restaurants opened in Vancouver – The Parker, Heirloom, and The Acorn. It was more rustic and homestyle than the others and the menu is very allergy friendly with vegan, gluten-free and dairy-free options.

Chef Heinrich is featuring his 5 course Tasting Menu of Italy. The menu started out strong, but lost a bit of detail half way through. I appreciated his attention to textures, plating, colour, and enthusiasm for exotic ingredients, but sometimes the ideas were better in theory. The execution wasn’t always there, but I could sense his passion and love for his work.

I still enjoyed the food and it offered excellent value, so mediocre dishes were easily overlooked, but it was the cultural experience that really made it. I strongly recommend coming with a group (minimum 4) because African food is best shared and meant to be enjoyed family style.
